The National Catholic Development Conference began as a response to the needs of a specific group of Catholic organizations that were originally members of the Catholic Press Association. As publishers of magazines and other educational materials, the Catholic Press Association served them very well. However, because these organizations were also involved in direct mail and other development efforts, they were looking for opportunities to enhance their skills and network with other Catholic organizations engaged in fundraising. Thus, in 1968, the Catholic Fundraising Conference, as it was first called, was created.


  • The Certificate of Incorporation of the National Catholic Development Conference Inc. is filed in the state of New York.
  • Mr. Frank Doyle becomes the first Executive Director and Fr. Richard Drabik, M.I.C. is the first elected Chairman of the Board.
  • In September, NCDC holds its first National Conference.


The Precepts of Stewardship, NCDC’s first ethical code, wins unanimous approval and is sent to every bishop, major religious superior, related organizations, and all NCDC members.


After three years of work by the Accounting Standards Committee, the 24-page Guide for Preparing a Statement of Accountability is mailed.[/horizontal_tab]


Mr. Peter Eltink becomes the first layman to be elected Chair of the Board.


NCDC President George T. Holloway is named to the NonProfit Times“Power and Influence Top 50.”


George T. Holloway retires as President/CEO after twenty-eight years. (1970-1999)


  • Sr. Georgette Lehmuth, OSF is named President/CEO of NCDC.
  • Scheduled to start on September 16, the Annual Conference is cancelled due to the terrorist attacks on September 11.


  • Sr. Kathleen Lunsmann, IHM, becomes the first woman elected Chair of the Board of Directors.
  • NCDC begins sending its first electronic newsletter, E-News.


  • NCDC and the National Association for Treasurers of Religious Institutes (NATRI, now the RCRI) collaborate to produce Stewardship for Mission.
  • NCDC President/CEO Sr. Georgette Lehmuth, OSF meets with Postmaster General John (Jack) E. Potter to discuss potentially devastating postal regulations that would have prevented charities from sending non-soliciting mail via nonprofit standard rate. In a move that many credit solely to Sr. Georgette, the regulation change is dropped for charitable fundraisers, saving them millions of dollars in potential postage increases.
  • Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans, the scheduled site of the Annual NCDC Conference. Less than six weeks before the scheduled Conference, the Conference is relocated to St. Louis.
  • NCDC hosts its first Fundamentals and More and Leadership Summit programs.


  • NCDC President/CEO Sr. Georgette Lehmuth, OSF is named for the first time to the NonProfit Times “Power and Influence Top 50.”
  • NCDC wins its first Catholic Press Association Award for Dimensions


  • After two years of work by the Accountability Task Force, the NCDC membership approves the Code of Stewardship and Ethics, replacing The Precepts of Stewardship.
  • Sr. Georgette testifies at a hearing of the Postal Rate Commission, emphasizing that good mail service at reasonable rates is critical to the missions of all Catholic charitable fundraisers.


The Accountability Task Force produces A Call to Accountability: Where Donors and Mission Meet, replacing the Guide for Preparing a Statement of Accountability.


NCDC launches its first webinar series, enabling Catholic fundraisers from around the world to participate in its programming.


Sr. Georgette is named for the fifth consecutive year by the NonProfit Times as on one of the “Power and Influence Top 50” in the nonprofit sector.
